Busy hands

The women of the Refugee Sewing Society stay busy! Amy Cornett, teacher of the jewelry-making class, helps her students learn new styles and techniques.

Jasoda, below, is sewing an apron with a pleated ruffle. The Bhutanese women prefer pleats over ruffles. Not sure why, but these aprons are definitely cute!

Chandra often wears her gold nose ornament to yarn class. The decoration hangs from a hole pierced between her nostrils. And -- guess what! -- all our Bhutanese women have this piercing whether they wear the ornament or not.
Mariam is new to the advanced sewing class. Raised in southern Sudan, she is proud to be an American citizen. She's ironing an apron covered with apples.
